A.L.I.C.E A.I. Chat Robot

(Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity) is an award-winning natural language processing chatterbot â€â€? a program that engages in a conversation with a human by applying some heuristical pattern matching rules to the human’s input. It was inspired by Joseph Weizenbaum’s classical ELIZA program but takes a quite different approach.
It is one of the strongest programs of its type and has won the Loebner Prize three times (in 2000, 2001 and 2004). However, the program is unable to pass the Turing test as even the casual user will often expose its mechanistic aspects in short conversations. The name of the bot was chosen because the computer that ran the first version of the software was called Alice.
Development began in 1995. The program was rewritten in Java beginning in 1998, resulting in the current version “Program D.” (A C++ version also exists.) The program uses an XML DTD called AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) for specifying the heuristic conversation rules. It is released under the copyleft license GPL. The A.L.I.C.E. open source project includes over 300 contributors from around the world. The main contributor and original author is Richard Wallace. In November 2002, two instances of the bot were set to talk to each other, with results showing A.L.I.C.E.’s weaknesses.

I still remember that my first encounter with A.L.I.C.E was in my college days…One day i was in my A.I class when our lecturer brought in a diskette and run it in front of the class. The computer screen shows a black and white dialog box and there is a text box that allow user to type in something…
We were all fasinated by this chatting program because it will reply us back whenever we type something in the dialog box and everytime the conversation freak us out because she know what we are talking about. Our lecturer allows us to play with it and we quickly gathered in front of the pc. I still remember that i type in some vulgar words trying to piss off A.L.I.C.E and she shut down the program by herself! That’s what i call intelligent!
Yesterday i found out A.L.I.C.E has a website! Go check it out and talk to her…you’ll never know what she gonna reply. Below is my conversation with her:

i heard about eliza long time ago.,
erm.. i tried to figure out how it works., but i think its just too complicated (00 contributors from around the world) right? huhu~ thin is very interesting.,
