How Interview Works in Malaysia

Below is purely my own opinion because im a interviewer and interviewee…i just sharing my opinion to those who are seeking for job in malaysia. No flaming for those who do not agree with me hehe.

> What is the job market trend now in M’sia? Does the employer value
> resume very much? cover letter? I believe when in M’sia no one teach
> you all this thing. In U.S, resume and cover letter is a very very
> important document. A not so attractive resume (layout, wording) can
> almost guarantee you no job. That’s why the resume workshop and
> interview skill seminar is every where.

kahsoon reply: the employer does value resume very much because after 1 week and imagine everyday there is 10 people come for interview….the only thing employee will refer back to filter out the best is your resume. But is resume the most important thing? the answer is no. The most important thing when it comes to interview is actually the interview itself…if you dont talk well, present youself well and convince them in the room. Employee will just put your resume in the outbox like i do lol. Actually there is two people who will teach you how to write an effective resume. one is your college and one is jobstreet. remember final year project in college? definately your supervisor will teach you how to write good resume unless your college sucks(no offence) And the best resume layout goes to….jobstreet. when you register jobstreet they will require you to fill in details about yourself…after submit everything in…you can refer back your details in a resume format…just print out the resume and you will have the best resume layout you can imagine.

> How about sending a thank you card after your interview to remind you
> employer about you, your skill, and your interest to join the company?

kahsoon reply: Actually this is redundant…a thank you card or a reminder of an applicants skill or interest wont help at all. The issue here is not being you are interest to join the company or not…the issue here is whether the company is interested to hire you. So what interest them to hire you? if you can offer the knowledge and skill they are looking for…i dont see any reason for them not to hire you unless you fail to impress them in the room.

> What about posting your job online? I know M’sia got jobstreet.com
> those kind of website, but what about own company website that can let
> you post resume and they only take your application there?

kahsoon reply: jobstreet is useless…even my classmates who have first class also send emails in jobstreet personally to all the companies and what those company do with all these emails? end up in the junk mail maybe? as for own company website that let you post resume…just dont put too high hopes on emailing resume kinda thing. If a company really serious to hire someone…they do walk ins…

> How’s the interview? What kind of question they asked you? A scenario?
> or what your skill? DO you have to do research about the company
> before the interview?

kahsoon reply: ok this is just an example. most important question is do you know the programming we require? do you have working experience? your result? your sample project? your resume? your expected salary? how long do you think you can work for us?….if companies which want to make a hard time for you in the interview session…they will ask something like this…what do you know about our company background? how do you think you can improve our company with your skill? or worst…on the spot give you a test to check if you are bullshitting.

> How the qualification? Do they look on your education or more likely
> your experience?

kahsoon reply: results is bronze…working experience is silver…sample projects is gold.

Any further questions about interviews, just post in my comments and if there is a high demand for more info about interviews in malaysia then i will write a new article in details about how to get a job and how to excel the interview to secure youself a job.

First job I got was as an RA working for my lecturer. I applied a hundred over jobs, attended some interviews and no success. The best jobs I got into were though friends and contacts - yes, I am a crony.

hi kahsoon..very insightful observation as both a interviewer and interviewee.

Anyway, i had the opportunity to be interviewed couple of times myself, and i have 50% hit rate so far.

Just wonder why many people like yourself have told us (graduates) that results are secondary to experience and actual projects etc…and YET, many occasions, i don’t even get an interview simply because i don’;t have strings of A+.

Is that just something employers like to say to please themselves? “oh we don’t look at results” (YEAH RIGHT)

well tomatonic, its quite obvious that if you can speak the way you wrote your comment there is already a fantastic chance that you would stand out above the rest. Results are important, if nothing more than getting you TO an interview. At least it got you to the 1st step. Those who didn’t think far enough ahead to get the good results, heck, isn’t it only natural that they say its not important. As an employer I would have many second thoughts about hiring those with poor results. Studying is one of the easiest things to do in the world. If this fellow can’t even get that right… how would he/she fare in more difficult matters? Yes some kids are dyslexic etc etc etc. My brother is to, but they have different talents. What do these people who have nothing have but an excuse?
